Introducing: SANDISK Optimus™

Internal storage demands have outpaced the way most brands organize their products. Gamers, creators, and professionals all need high-performance storage, but they shouldn't have to decode product names to determine which product works best for their use.

Today's systems handle it all, from massive game installs to 8K video workflows to local AI processing. Storage choices should be just as purposeful.

With Sandisk becoming its own company in 2025, product leaders saw an opportunity to reset that experience and replace complexity with clarity.

The result is SANDISK Optimus™, a simplified portfolio for the gaming, creator, and professional communities that will provide the internal performance and capacity needed for an increasingly demanding digital world.

The SANDISK Optimus™ portfolio will replace the WD_BLACK™ and WD Blue internal SSD portfolio, building on a legacy of acclaimed SSD performance and a stellar reputation, particularly among gamers. The new portfolio offers a simpler choice for the right storage based on use, with options ranging from value driven to the highest-performing available.

A new portfolio built on the same greatness

SANDISK Optimus™ portfolio is divided into three distinct product categories:

From storage built for casual users and enthusiasts to the SANDISK Optimus™ GX PRO line built for professionals, SANDISK Optimus™ portfolio is designed to deliver the best.

"The meaning of the portfolio name is that these are our best client products", said Derek Hockman, Senior Manager, Internal SSD Marketing and Strategy. "The technology and quality that people loved in WD_BLACK™ products stays the same. What's really important to us is that our customers aren't losing anything from WD_BLACK™ and WD Blue SSDs. SANDISK Optimus™ is the best you can get in each category."

Built with purpose

Those categories are very intentional. Sandisk builds specific products for specific segments and use cases, not generic drives later marketed to different audiences. That focus also reflects a reality beyond gaming: many of the world's top creators already choose gaming products for their own builds. The new portfolio structure makes the path clearer.

"It wasn't so much reinventing the wheel", said Jimmy Gomez, Senior Technical Product Marketing Manager. "It was an opportunity to be more consistent with our messaging. When someone is building a high-end machine to do 4K editing or an AI machine for large language models, they know there's a perfect product for them, too."

A commitment to consumers

With so much industry focus on providing solutions for AI data centers, the SANDISK Optimus™ re-branding signifies a commitment to the consumer market as well. WD_BLACK™ has always been a brand for gamers. While SANDISK Optimus™ brand expands to welcome creators and professionals seeking high-performing storage, it's clear that Sandisk has no intention of abandoning its core audiences.

"There's a lot of uncertainty right now, with markets feeling like enterprise is taking over and companies are taking products out of the market", Hockman said. "We're leaning into our consumer base and launching a new brand, maintaining what makes our products great. Customers are not losing any specs or any speed. We're leaning into it more."

A brand for the future

SANDISK Optimus™ is more than just a name change. It's the start of a clearer, more intuitive era for internal storage. The drives behind the brand remain the same trusted and high-performing products as WD_BLACK™ SSDs, now organized to reflect how people actually use their systems.

"It's the decision-making that carries through", Hockman said. "What made WD_BLACK™ SSDs special, we're bringing the same mentality into SANDISK Optimus™ brand."
